After recording with laptops and mobile gear for a few years, the brothers decided to start using more permanent home studios collaboratively. Ernie was beginning the idea of building out his garage as a bonafide studio, and Vince was learning to use various DAWs in his office studio in Atlanta. In 2011, Vince visited Ernie in Nashville to begin recording what would become their main eponymous release. However, both were not really focused on traditional songwriting at the time, and more focused on the recording process and methodology. Bryne’s How Music Works would be published a year later, but Ernie was all ready curious about building songs off of grooves and loops. Vince had already brought over the upright bass and his hollow body guitar and thought that live acoustic songs being recored as loops would be interesting to capture.
What emerged was a few ideas for the Gray Brother’s record, but instead would mostly be world music like tracks that would go on Vince’s first attempt at a solo EP, Fools, and a few other one offs, particularly one of Ernie’s ideas, Closer to the Fire.
